Name:
Kapalekanaka
(Alek)
Year Started Surfing: 1984
Regular or goofy (surf stance only): Goofy
What’s your surfboard of choice? 6’3”
round pintail
Grew up surfing where/home break(s)?
Spent most of my childhood years growing up on the mainland
in ghettospectacular LBC, so I’d paddle out at all
the nooks and crannies between Surfside and Huntington
Beach… the Bowl, Anderson Street, the Cliffs, Taco
Bell Reef, the Apartments, and of course, HB pier.
What break do you call home now and why?
Holding it down for the ‘crans… cause it’s
down the street from where I live, it’s consistent
- at least for the winter months, and when it’s
“on” it’s as good as any beach break
I’ve surfed. Did I mention it’s down the street?
Favorite type of wave? Thick, heavy,
and hollow.
Favorite spot? I’d say, but then
I’d have to kill you…
When confronted by a big, thick closeout barrel
do you straighten out or
pull in and enjoy the view? Pull into the womb,
hold my breath, and wait for the spin cycle!
How often do you get in the water? Four
to six days a week..
What do you do for a living? I’m
a starving PhD student and I work part time for the UCLA
Center for Health Policy Research.
Marital status? Happily Married.
What qualifies you to judge the waves for the
rest of us? Nothing really… just plenty
of time spent watching the surf here at El Porto.
What do you like about doing the report (aside
from the obvious fame and fortune)? It makes
me get up in the morning. I’m not a morning person.
And during the middle of winter season I may get to see
a sunrise.
What possesses you to get up at dawn every morning
and do a surf report for free? I remember what
it was like not to be blessed to live so close to the
beach.
What makes your surf reports better than those
of our competitors? I surf where I report.
Do you ever wake up late and hungover and just
make something up? I Nope. I take pride in all
things I do… and I feel an obligation to the handful
of people who do read my reports.
Any words of advice for someone who is just learning to
surf? Be patient. Be persistent. Make it enjoyable.
Other than surfing what are your hobbies? Weight
training, running, snowboarding.
Any surf destination you haven’t been to
that you’d like to check out? Madagascar…
now that would be sick.
Where was your best surf trip ever? Hawai’i
is home… ‘nuf said.
What’s the biggest wave you ever rode?
Not sure, but I was definitely underguned with a 7’6”
at Alligators.
Have you ever been in a fight out in the water?
Although I do NOT condone violence, it happens, and I
may have been implicated in a situation.
If you had to choose only 1 who would it be?
Ginger with the professor’s brains… mmm, mmm
yummy.
Last book you read? Income, Socioeconomic
Status, and Health: Exploring the Relationships. James
A. Auerbach and Barbara K. Krimgold (Eds.)
Favorite movie? Fight Club, The Rock,
Not Another Teen Movie, Friday, Gladiator
Favorite band? Metallica
Any parting thoughts or philosophical statements?
Do onto others as you would have done onto you…
or something like that.
