Name:
Matthew
Year Started Surfing: 2001
Regular or goofy (surf stance only): Regular
What’s your surfboard of choice? Lately
been riding a new South Point longboard
Grew up surfing where/home break(s)? Grew
up in CT; Long Island Sound has very few epic days.
What break do you call home now and why? Venice
Pier, closest break to where I live
Favorite type of wave? Big,workable faces
– anything that can get my big butt moving ?
Favorite spot? Just depends on the day
/ conditions. Been spending a lot of time at Leo and County
Line.
When confronted by a big, thick closeout barrel
do you straighten out or pull in and enjoy the view?
Straighten out – I gotta work the next day!
How often do you get in the water?
4-5 days a week.
What do you do for a living?
Bond Trader
Marital status?
Married
What qualifies you to judge the waves for the
rest of us?
I surf the breaks I report, I know how the tide and wind
affect it and, most importantly, I am an exalent spellur.
What do you like about doing the report (aside
from the obvious fame and fortune)?
Mostly I’m doing it for the money. Man, cannot WAIT
for that first check.
What possesses you to get up at dawn every morning
and do a surf report for free?
Free? What do you mean, free? Mike? Is that true?
What makes your surf reports better than those
of our competitors?
They suck, we don’t….oh, and we actually go
and look at the waves. I think that really helps.
Do you ever wake up late and hungover and just
make something up.
Yes, yes and no.
Any words of advice for someone who is just learning to
surf?
If you want to surf, just go do it. Get a suit and a board
and get in there. Stay out of the way, watch, listen and
learn. You provide the effort and pretty soon you’ll
be the guy surfing instead of the guy watching from the
beach
Other than surfing what are your hobbies?
Ice Hockey, photography, guitar, piano, golf – most
anything outdoors or music related. If I could just get
my piano outside…..
Any surf destination you haven’t been to that you’d
like to check out?
More places than I can name; haven’t done much traveling
in my surfing career yet.
What’s the biggest wave you ever rode?
3 ft overhead ( I am 6’5” ) . I rode it then
it rode me.
Have you ever been in a fight out in the water?
Please. If you want to fight, take up boxing. Treat people
the way you want to be treated, let other people have
waves too and that way everyone goes home happy.
If you had to choose only 1 who would it be? Marrianne,
Ginger or Gilligan. Marrianne
Last book you read?
MSRB Regulations Manual – Biannual NASD audit coming
soon
Favorite movie?
To Kill a Mockingbird
Favorite band?
Level 42
Any parting thoughts or philosophical statements?
Hard work often pays off over time, but laziness always
pays off now.
