Name:
Scott Revlin
Year Started Surfing: Off and on since
the early 90’s. I’ve been back on the board
for about a year and a half now.
Regular or goofy (surf stance only): Regular
What’s your surfboard of choice?
Normally a 5’11 quad fish or a 6’4 CI thruster
if the waves cooperate
Grew up surfing where/home break(s)?
The Pit, Mesa Lane, Rincon, Emma Wood, and Sandbar. For
the record, we always knew Bobby Martinez would either
burn out at age 20 or be world champion one day. Looks
like he might do both!
What break do you call home now and why?
Man, I think I have to claim Bay Street just based upon
proximity. How sad is that. I spend a fair amount of time
at “points north” too.
Favorite type of wave?
Cobblestone rights with my brother and no one else around
Favorite spot?
Santa Barbara County point breaks.
When confronted by a big, thick closeout barrel
do you straighten out or pull in and enjoy the view?
Depends how long it’s been since the last pull in
How often do you get in the water?
As much as I can; usually 2-3 times a week.
What do you do for a living?
Special education consulting. No, I am not kidding
Marital status?
Sorry ladies, I’m taken. My wife doesn’t surf
but she snowboards like a champ
What qualifies you to judge the waves for the
rest of us?
20/20 vision, a digital camera, and a tendency to wake
up early.
What do you like about doing the report (aside
from the obvious fame and fortune)?
Any excuse to email back and forth with Uncle Grant…
What makes your surf reports better than those
of our competitors?
We actually check the surf, and know what we’re
talking about. This may be a surprise to our competitors,
but Venice hasn’t been “1-3 feet with poor-to-fair
sectiony lines” for the last three years straight.
Some days it’s better and some days it’s worse,
but it’s certainly not the same everyday.
Do you ever wake up late and hungover and just
make something up.
How dare you
Any words of advice for someone who is just learning to
surf?
Don’t buy a longboard. Don’t run me over.
I don’t care how many people you’ve snaked
at Sunset, don’t bring that stuff to the big boy
spots. Oh, and have fun!
Other than surfing what are your hobbies?
Snowboarding, reading, following my wife from happy hour
to happy hour.
Any surf destination you haven’t been to that you’d
like to check out?
One day I’ll make it to the Indian Ocean.
Where was your best surf trip ever?
Behind the guardhouse in West Santa Barbara County (if
you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t
bother asking) with three of my best friends for a pre-bachelor
party trip. Thanks Jack!
What’s the biggest wave you ever rode?
Probably Little Rincon December of 1995. It was scraping
the top of the pier
Have you ever been in a fight out in the water?
I’ve had some verbal altercations, mostly because
I’m so considerate in the water that it drives me
crazy when others aren’t.
If you had to choose only 1 who would it be? Marrianne,
Ginger or Gilligan.
Marianne for sure.
Last book you read?
East of Eden by Steinbeck
Favorite movie?
Any movie by Wes Anderson.
Favorite band?
Strung Out, Lagwagon, Alkaline Trio, Jack Johnson
Any parting thoughts or philosophical statements?
Hey, have fun surfing. That’s
what it’s for. If you find yourself getting bent
out of shape and yelling at people every time you surf,
maybe it’s time to find a new hobby.
