Name: Seth
Year Started Surfing: 1988
Regular or goofy (surf stance only): Regular
What’s your surfboard of choice?
Shortboard or Fish, but sometimes the Battleship is a
blast!
Grew up surfing where/home break(s)?
Hermosa Beach. 16th St, Southside of the pier, Breakwall,
wherever there was a descent sandbar.
What break do you call home now and why?
Hermosa! I know its hard to get it on a good day, but
those classic winter mornings make it all worthwhile
Favorite type of wave?
Raul’s right pointbreak shoulder high – double
overhead
Favorite spot?
16th street (at least back in the day)
When confronted by a big, thick closeout barrel do you
straighten out or pull in and enjoy the view?
I enjoy the view. With the beaches becoming more and more
materialistic how could you pass up the only view you
can’t buy?
How often do you get in the water?
At least twice a week. I am sadly more of a weekend warrior
in the winter time but if its good I am pulling out the
sick days!
What do you do for a living?
Systems Administration/Computer consulting (computer and
network support and setup)
Marital status?
Sorry ladies but I am happily married.
What qualifies you to judge the waves for the rest of
us?
Other than the fact I get up crazy early and look at the
water, I don’t know, I just hope I do a descent
job at it.
What do you like about doing the report (aside from the
obvious fame and fortune)?
I am famous? What fortune? Umm I guess I do it because
it forces me to get up early and gives me a chance to
take my son to the beach every day, even if for only 10-15
mins.
What possesses you to get up at dawn every morning and
do a surf report for free?
I am up anyway. I have the worlds best alarm clock, a
5yr old running around at 5 or 6am, it’s hard to
sleep late, and it gives me a chance to get him out of
the house to burn off energy!
What makes your surf reports better than those of our
competitors?
I am located in Hermosa Beach, not some office. I L00K
at the water everyday and tell you what it’s doing.
I grew up surfing here and will be surfing here for a
long time. Local knowledge is the key.
Do you ever wake up late and hungover and just make something
up?
If I had the chance maybe, but I have the world’s
best alarm clock, and it doesn’t have a snooze button.
Any words of advice for someone who is just learning to
surf?
Learn the rules, don’t paddle out if the waves are
out of your league, and most of all have fun. That’s
what the surfing is all about isn’t it?
Other than surfing what are your hobbies?
Any time I have out of the water is pretty much devoted
to the family. When my son gets older I might get back
into snowboarding, and the occasional video game.
Any surf destination you haven’t been to that you’d
like to check out? Considering I have only surfed from
Ventura County to Baja, there are way to may to list.
Where was your best surf trip ever?
Baja, went to K38, K55, Raul’s, and a few other
spots. It was overhead to double overhead all week and
just perfect!
What’s the biggest wave you ever rode?
Approx. 15-18 foot faces
Have you ever been in a fight out in the water?
Nope. I have been hassled and I have hassled/checked people,
but it has never gone to blows. Sadly though, I have seen
plenty of fights.
If you had to choose only 1 who would it be? Marrianne,
Ginger or Gilligan?
Marrianne She looks innocent, but we all know better.
Last book you read?
Paper Shredders, a book of Surf poetry and short stories.
Favorite movie? Ong-Bak the Thai Warrior (at least this
week) and Kung Faux
Favorite band?
Just about anything reggae, and Diesel Boy.
Any parting thoughts or philosophical statements?
Surfers walk on water, so Jesus must have been a surfer
too!
