Surf Forecast - Good for February 28th-March 2nd 2008

Still looking fun out there!

*You'll notice at the bottom of the surf report pages, (under the text), that there is now a small audio player. We will be implementing this technology over the next few days so we can deliver real time, first person, dawn patrol audio reports. The way it will work is that the reporter will go down to the beach at first light observe and call in his report which will load directly on to the report page. After that the reporter will do his or her normal text and image report.

No site has this type of real time first person report and we're proud to deliver it to you. Bear with us over the next few days as we hammer out the details. Unfortunately this doen't work with PDA's yet but will soon.

This "C.O.D" service, (Crack of dawn), will begin on Monday morning.

You need to have a Java-enabled browser to view the controls and play this message. To install Java, click here and then select 'Free Java Download'.
After installing Java, come back.
Here's an example from the afternoon El Porto report.

UPDATED Feb. 27th at 4:30PM

What a killer day! Hope you were able to get wet...if not, don't worry about it. We'll have varying degrees of swell for the next 4-6 days. Both West and South facing breaks should be working, so get out there and have some fun.

The California buoy
is up to 10.5 feet at 14 seconds.

The Harvest buoy
is down to 5.1 feet at 4-6 second intervals from an angle of 299 degrees.

The Santa Monica buoy is down to 3.0 feet from a dominant angle of 212 degrees at 16-18 seconds. Nice, Southern Hemi, deep water ground swell energy!

The Santa Barbara channel is quiet.

The Tides for
Thursday...

Thursday
2008-02-28 1:01 AM 4.63 feet High Tide
2008-02-28 6:18 AM Sunrise
2008-02-28 9:54 AM 1.30 feet Low Tide
2008-02-28 5:44 PM Sunset
2008-02-28 6:19 PM Last Quarter

By Thursday morning we should be firing on all cylinders with a combination of ground swell out of the NW, (280-290) & SW, (200-210). This should make for a nice mix and hopefully peaky conditions at the beach breaks. The choice of surf breaks should be limitless and definitely worth a sniff around the coast. The top West facing beaches will definitely pull the bulk of the energy and should be head high to overhead by first light. Most of the South facing breaks will go waist to chest high. There may be some gaps between the Southerly sets but breaks like Topanga and Malibu should have some fun little waves. With the possibility of some new sand bars and multi directional swells you may stumble onto something good if you shop around.

For conditions, it looks like light and variable winds at 3-5 MPH until noon and just a hair stronger through the rest of the day. Look for a high air temp of 71 degrees.

On Friday morning we'll have continued action as both the NW and SW swells hold on for another day, (but are likely a shade smaller). Once again, the better West facing breaks will have the biggest surf, with head high to overhead waves, but the South facing beaches will also have some fun little waves, so take a look around.

For conditions, it looks like light and variable winds at 3-5 MPH until noon and just a hair stronger through the rest of the day. Look for a high air temp of 72 degrees.

For Saturday morning
things are looking to wind down a bit with wave heights dipping into the chest to head high range. There will still be some action out of both the NW and SW, and in all likelihood, some decent waves to be had. Basically, it will just be a smaller version of Friday. Light and variable winds should prevail.

By Sunday morning we should be back in the chips as a new 14-16 second interval swell, from an angle of 300-305 degrees angles down the coast. This energy, being a bit steeper, will seek out only the most exposed West facing breaks. Shadowed breaks will be bypassed completely or receive only reflective energy. There's also a nice band of 16-18 second South swell from a steep 185-190 degrees. This swell, much like it's counter part, will be selctive about what breaks it hits. Look for the OC to finally come to life
with head high plus surf and Topanga and Malibu should also be able to feed off this direction. I'll keep an eye on this one, it's shaping up to be another good day of surf and the conditions look excellent as well.

The water temps are as follows: Huntington 57 The South Bay 57 and the Malibu area 55.

I'll be back Thursday night with the latest scoop.
