Surfer’s Chiropractic

Posted on: September 4th, 2012 by admin

Every surfer wants to surf as much as humanly possible. However, sometimes injures can curtail your water time or hinder your performance. Surfers can take a pounding during a session that can cause immediate problems, or cause problems that will manifest themselves in the future.

A possible non-drug solution to help you is Chiropractic care. Many professional surfers such as: Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Lance Burkhart, and countless others utilize Chiropractors to help them overcome injuries and improve their performance. There is a Chiropractor on the medical staff of the WCT tour.

Chiropractic works by removing nerve interference. Nerve interference is when the nerve impulse or “life force” that is sent from the brain down the spinal cord and travels along the nerves to the end organ is not reaching the end organ at 100%. A good analogy would be if you had a garden, and some of the vegetables were getting sufficient hydration and some weren’t. The hydrated crops would flourish and the others would not. They might grow, but would not be as big and juicy as they could have been.

Many surfers are not surfing up to their potential because they have nerve interference. Nerve interference in the body can manifest themselves as symptoms. Some common musculoskeletal symptoms are: back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, wrist pain, elbow pain, knee pain, foot pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, and headaches.

Chiropractic care is safe and effective. Additionally, Chiropractors can utilize different therapies to help speed up the healing process and rehabilitate injured areas. Physiotherapy modalities, soft tissue techniques (ART, myofascial release, etc.), rehabilitative exercises, and nutritional support are some of the most common tools Chiropractors use to help their patients.

If you don’t plan on using your spine or wiping out, then you probably won’t consider visiting a Chiropractor. However, if you want to spend more time in the water and improve your skills then consider Chiropractic. It is a win/win situation for every surfer
