LYNN
DES LIERRES
A dark silhoulette leans against a navy ford pick
up blending into the
depths. The temperature is in the mid 40's and the
time is 4:30 a.m.
It is hours before what is considered dawn patrol
yet the sound of
silence is broken,by a yawn, sounds of coconut wax
scratching the smooth surface of a Longboard, and
a shadowy figure shivering on the horizon. She peels
off her clothes, pulls on her wetsuit, blindly descending
a winding dirt trail to Bluff Cove in blackness
that she knows like the back of her hand.
Who is this person? Do you know her? If you don't,
it is probably
because Lynne Deslierres has been quietly surfing
Palos Verdes
for more than 30 years... In winter months, she'll
hit the water
two hours before dawn, while most are sleeping.
Discipline is what drives Lynne, and it is that
discipline which has
propeled her in her career as a Software Engineer
for PDIT, based in Long Beach. Although she does
not enjoy surf contests, she has placed first in
several, and even made the finals of two mens longboard
contest, the Del Mar classic in 1987 (6th out of
36), and an Earth Day contest in 1996, (fourth out
of 40 men).
Although she's a Palos Verdes local and frequents"the
Cove" in winter
months, Lynne loves to travel. She has surfed,Cabo,
Fiji, and France,
and looks forward to a return trip to Tavarua where
she surfed her biggest waves. Her scariest session
was locally surfing Indicators in fog and pouring
rain just before midnight in the late 70's. Some
may call her
"fearless," but she says she's pragmatic.
"I've broken at least 12 bones," she saysHer
best memory of El Porto was breaking two fingers
on each hand in a surf contest."I'll probably
break more over the next 30 years..."
