PAULINE
MENCZER
How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
I'm 5'3".I weigh 115 lbs.
When and where were you born?
I was born in 1970 in Sydney
What's it like growing up there?
It was hard growing up in a crowded surf break(Bondi
Beach) surfers and swimmers in the way all the time.
The guys never gave the girls any respect in the
water.
Where do you live now?
I live all over the world as I travel so much But
I do spend a bit of time in El Porto, as my sponsor
Stickgirl surfboards are there. Also Blink swim
wear and my clothing sponsor One West Push are all
around that area.
Do you like it better where you live now
or where you grew up?
I like where I live now, in Byron Bay, as it's not
in the city any more, the surf is 100 times better
also.
How did you first get started in surfing?
My brother broke his surfboard in half (foam surf
board) and I started on one of the halves. I was
14 years old and it was Bronte Beach in Sydney.
When did you start competing?
Not long after I started about 15 1/2years old.
What size boards do you ride?
I ride 5'10" boards.
Do you use any thing special in competition,
different from your normal day to day boards?
No, but my shaper Matt Calvani has made me some
nice boards, I just won Santa Cruz on one of them.
What would you consider the highlight of
your career?
Being world champ in 1993. Winning any event gives
me a great high.
Who are your sponsors?
One West Push clothing, Blink swimwear, and Stickgirl
surfboards.
What is your favorite place to surf?
Bells Beach is my favorite and Rincon in Santa Barbara.
Where in this great world have you traveled
to?
I have traveled to America, Hawaii, Puerto Rico,
Brazil, Japan, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland,
England, Bali, Tahiti, Reunion Islands, and Mauritius.
Where do you see the state of professional
women's surfing going?
Women's surfing is really growing and the young
girls rip. Look out for the new generation.
How many surf boards do you break each year?
One board per year.
What's the biggest wave you have ever surfed
and where was it?
Oz, Margerate River 15-18 feet
How do the waves at El Porto rank in your
book of waves?
El Porto can get good, but not too often. I wish
it got more swell in the summer. I give it in the
low fours.
Do your sponsors pay for your trips every
where? (Do they send you first class?)
I get paid a monthly wage. No I don't travel first
class.
Were you stoked to have a picture of you
used for a post card?
Yeah, my sponsor One West Push made that for me.
They're a cool company they want to push women's
surfing that's why the girls line of clothing is
called Push.
