SUE
DELL
SURFIN' SHEILAS-Sue Dell
In 1977 when "The Eagles" recorded the
chartbuster, "Take It To The Limit," 17
year old Sue Dell took the lyrics to heart and has
been taking on new challenges since. Surfing is
her passion but she has also enjoyed other "extreme
water sports such as white-water kayaking, river-rafting
and scuba.
She even tried skydiving making several jumps, (in
the 80's).
Sue is a former competitive swimmer and her background
makes her a natural in the water. This Haggartys
"local",(Harvey-Wallbanger), has been
dancing over Rocks and Reefs for years. Her affinity
for "R & R" can be seen at Hags, Monuments,(Cabo)
and Hawaii. Thank heavens El Porto is a sandy beach!
She has that "Go for It" attitude..."no
rock too small." Her history is like the movie
North Shore, only in reverse. She has surfed Pipeline,
Off-The-Wall, ten foot,(Cabo), and THEN a wave pool
in Palm Springs,(Can you believe she actually admits
to this)?
Sue's career spans many years. She was NSSA National
Champion in 1985, and named to the WSA All Star
Team in 1988-89. She is currently sponsored by CHP
Surf and rides short boards for local shaper Jack
Cirrito in Redondo Beach.
When asked why she surfs her response is, "Surfing
is surreal...a cleansing release...the closest I'll
ever get to walking on water,(which is what I tell
the kids I teach in surf classes).
Will we ever get Sue on a longboard? "NEVER!"
This incredible woman is generous both in and out
of the water. She is a sales rep. for Johnson Wax,
volunteers as a surf instructor for King Harbor
Church and is a choir member at Rolling Hills Covenant
Church.
"I have been given a lot." Sue says. "
I believe that to whom much is given, much will
be required."
