JOSH
SCRIBNER
This edition of "who's hot" features a
guy most of you have seen ripping on a regular basis.
He's a little different in that he really isn't
part of the pack and he seems to slip in and out
of the line up with little fanfare or notice. He
prefers it that way, but if approached, he is an
affable and knowledgeable guy.
Josh Scribner has what best be described as a reserved
air (no pun intended) about him and his solid repertoire
of moves makes you question your own surfing ability.
"Scrib" is a homegrown boy who went to
UCLA where he surfed NSSA for a few years. He is
proud of his devout faith and deep involvement in
the church where he works as a teacher and a youth
pastor at The Lighthouse Chapel.
Josh combines his love for God, surfing and teaching
by running a surf academy at his schools summer
camp. Like a lot of people, I always wondered who
this quiet mystery ripper was and I enjoyed getting
to know Josh over a few tacos at El Tarasco This
guy defines the term honest man.
Tell me a little about yourself
Josh: Well, lets see, I'm 25 I have a wonderful
wife and I love to surf.
Where are you from?
Josh: I was born and raised on the west side Tell
me a little about your early surfing experience
My dad was responsible for me starting to surf.
The first place I ever surfed was at state beach
in Santa Monica on a Rockin Fig Board. I feel in
love with surfing from day one.
Does your dad still surf?
Josh: A little bit yeah. My dad is an athlete and
played in the NFL with The LA Rams. He is involved
in the church as well.
What was your first surf trip out of LA?
Josh: Jalama, was my first but the biggest surf
I have been in was El Porto During The El Nino Swells.
What's your favorite spot?
Josh: I really like Drainpipes and of course Porto
is a favorite as well.
Are you sponsored?
Josh: I surf for Islands Surf in Santa Monica. It's
a great shop in Santa Monica near the border of
WLA. Although they are outside of the South Bay,
they have a good selection of boards and the owners
are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
I ride Roberts Boards. He is a shaper out of Ventura
and I can honestly say they are the best boards
around. (It shows)
Where do you get your stoke?
Josh: My deep faith, the teachings of Jesus Christ
and my work with kids as youth pastor.
What are your goals as far as surfing is involved?
Josh: I want to attain confidence in any size surf
and I want to make my sponsors proud.
Who inspires you?
Josh: Two guys that stand out are Mike Appel and
Marcus Fender. They were early influences on my
surfing at El Porto. I think Daniel Del Castillio
and Scott Daley rip and I admire them greatly.
(Choking on my chips and salsa). Did you just say
Mike Appel? Knowing Mike as I do it seems a little
ironic that a guy of your faith and background gives
credit to the "mayor"
Josh: Yeah, both Mike and Marcus razzed me pretty
hard as a kid but they pushed my limits as far as
big surf and overall going for it. I believe it
helped my surfing and determination in the end.
I think Ill end the interview right here if thats
OK Scrib?
Josh: Sure, thanks and make sure you mention Roberts
and Islands ok? They treat me real well and they
provide a superior service. Will do. Any body else
you want to thank? I want to thank God and my hero,
my Dad and of course my Mom.
