How Beach Walks Support Healthy Aging
Many people think you can’t stay truly active when you get older because, well… When’s the last time you saw an 85-year-old at the gym? But actually, staying active is much simpler than that, and nobody needs a gym for it.
A walk can do more than enough for your health, and if that walk happens on a beach?
Oh, man, that’s like therapy and exercise in one.
Why You’d Want to Take Beach Walks
Let’s cover the physical side of beach walks first. Walking on sand is simply more demanding than walking on a pavement, and that’s a good thing.
A sandy surface changes with every step you take, so you can’t exactly be on autopilot when you’re walking.
What happens is that your body is making adjustments every step of the way, and that means that your ankles work harder and your knees don’t bend the same every time. Even the small stabilizing muscles around your core and hips stay engaged. Down the line, this will translate into better balance and coordination, and as we all know, those go down as we age.
To be clear, walking is healthy no matter what you walk on, but a flat pavement simply isn’t as big a challenge as sand is.
There’s also a mental side to this.
Compare walking in a city and walking next to the ocean, and you’ll immediately get the picture. The ocean waves have a rhythm, and the sound makes anxiety disappear. Plus, looking at open water makes you focus on it, meaning you can’t stress over bills and appointments.
I honestly don’t get why beach walks or just walks in general aren’t encouraged more in long-term facilities and nursing homes. I bet we’d have much happier and healthier seniors if they were.
My cousin’s mom lives in a nursing home in Alabama, and she actually tripped and fell in the hallway because her muscles were almost atrophied due to lack of exercise.
Now, tell me regular walks couldn’t have prevented that!
There are plenty of Alabama elder injury claim resources for my cousin to go through with the lawyer in the aftermath, but the damage has already been done. And it wasn’t necessary.
Conclusion
In short – beach walks FTW.
As long as you’re wearing appropriate footwear and you drink enough water, a walk on the beach has only good things to offer. And if you get tired – no problem! Sit down and give your brain a break by staring at the waves.
It’s like a magic wand for destressing.
