Lucio is a native of Santa Catarina, Brazil, but Playa del Rey has been his home for the past 20 years. His first experience with surfing came at the age of 18 while enlisting in the Air Force in Florianopolis, in 1986. While in town he watched the Hang Loose Pro at Joaquina Beach. It would take nearly twenty years before he had any contact with surfing again.

Arriving in the US in 1990, after two years of travels through Europe, he worked as a parking attendant and pizza delivery man until he got a job as a guitar tech at a local shop. It was while working at the guitar shop that he developed an interest in photography and started shooting nature and wildlife. It was a chance encounter with Lauren, an El Porto local surfer, that got him interested in surfing photography. He’s been shooting surfing almost exclusively ever since

In his spare time he likes to shoot sunsets at the beach, airplanes at LAX, and the beautiful Eastern Sierras. He recently bought a wetsuit and a foam board and is the process of becoming the next Joel Tudor.

His current equipment is comprised of Canon bodies and lenses; his main set-up is a 5D Mk3 body and EF 500mm f4 lens, as well as a Canon 1D MkIII and 70-200mm f2.8 for wave shots and portraits.

He shoots almost exclusively at El Porto, and you can check more of his shots on his website www.portosurfer.com.
