HURRICANE WATCH August 10, 2014 – Hurricane Julio remains a Category 1 hurricane. Julio will pass about 300 miles north of the Hawaiian Islands today. This will be far enough to keep most of the impacts away from Hawaii. The hurricane has generated large swells, and these waves will be pounding the north- and east-facing shores of the Islands today and tonight. The rough surf will make for dangerous swimming conditions.

By Tuesday morning that 175-185 degree energy will continue to wind down with sporadic sets from that same steep angle. Once again this energy will only get into the most exposed South facing breaks.

Wednesday morning holds a glimmer of hope as some small but potent SW energy creeps in from a 195-200 degree angle to give the better South facing breaks some waist high sets.

We’ll also see some waist high, medium interval, (10-12 seconds) from a liberal 280 degree angle out of the NW. This should produce waist high sets for the better West facing beaches.

Thursday morning looks a little better with another burst of SW energy entering the fold. Not big, but long interval at 19 seconds from a liberal 220 degree angle. I’m guessing there will be some small, but powerful little sets in the waist high plus zone.
