HURRICANE WATCH August 12, 2014 – Tropical Storm Julio is stubbornly churning several hundred miles to the north of Hawaii, causing no threat to any land masses. The system is expected to lose steam gradually over the next several days as it eventually recurves ahead of an approaching cold front. By the end of the week, Julio will be losing tropical characteristics as it merges with the front.

A second feature of note is located several hundred miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico. This disturbance, a tropical wave and associated low center, is expected to develop over the next few days as environmental conditions are increasingly conducive for development. Model guidance suggests that “Karina” will track generally west-northwest and away from the coast of Mexico.

Lastly, an area of disturbed weather some 1,500 miles east-southeast of Hawaii will have some potential for development over the next few days as it heads gradually westward. Conditions are not overly supportive of development, but that could change some later in the week.

Wednesday morning holds a glimmer of hope as some small but potent SW energy creeps in from a 195 degree angle to give the better South facing breaks some waist high sets.

We’ll also see some waist high, medium interval swell, (10-12 seconds), from a liberal 280 degree angle out of the NW. This should produce waist high sets for the better West facing beaches.

Nothing to really hang your hat on as we continue to beg for crumbs. This is pretty much the worst stretch for surf I’ve seen in a LOOOONG time. Get off your fat ass Mother Nature and give a little love to So Cal!

Thursday morning looks a little better with another burst of SW energy entering the fold. Not big, but long interval at 19 seconds from a liberal 220 degree angle. I’m guessing there will be some small, but powerful little sets in the waist high plus zone. This looks a bit inconsistent but should have a little pop when they roll through.

Friday morning that 220 degree energy will peak with waist to possibly chest high sets. We should also see some much steeper South swell roll in from a fairly sideways 185 degree angle. The most exposed South facing breaks will benefit from both swells so plan accordingly.

For Saturday morning we’ll be left with waist high surf up and down the coast. There could be some sporadic trailer sets out of the South but I wouldn’t bank on it!

Sunday morning is looking pretty feeble as there is no swell of not on the charts right now. * There is however a chance at some Hurricane swell showing up. If it does indeed materialize the first part of the swell will be moving up the line from a super steep 160-170 degree angle and only get into the extreme South facing breaks. This is all speculation at this point so stay tuned.
