hurricane
HURRICANE WATCH August 13, 2014 – Julio has maintained minimal hurricane strength Wednesday. The system is located about 625 miles to the north of Honolulu, Hawaii and is no threat to land. Julio has maintained a defined eye but will gradually weaken as it makes a turn more to the north and eventually northeast later today into tonight.

Tropical Depression 11E has strengthened into Tropical Storm Karina over the eastern Pacific and is located approximately 400 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. This system is moving to the west-northwest and is expected to strengthen further over the next 24 to 48 hours and could become a hurricane Friday.

An area of disturbed weather roughly 1,400 miles southeast of Hawaii looks rather disorganized. However, computer forecasts suggest a more favorable environment might develop over this system, allowing it to become better organized, but this could take a few days.

Thursday morning looks a little better with a burst of SW energy entering the fold. Not big, but long interval at 19 seconds from a liberal 220 degree angle. I’m guessing there will be some small, but powerful little sets in the waist high plus zone. This looks a bit inconsistent but should have a little pop when they roll through.

Friday morning that 220 degree energy will peak with waist to possibly chest high sets. We should also see some much steeper South swell roll in from a fairly sideways 185 degree angle. The most exposed South facing breaks will benefit from both swells so plan accordingly.

For Saturday morning we’ll be left with waist high surf for the top South facing breaks. Both the SW and S energy will be on the decline so expect to do a bit of waiting between sets.

Sunday morning is looking pretty feeble as the 2 South swells get Deep Sixed. * There is however a chance at some Hurricane swell showing up. If it does indeed materialize the first part of the swell will be moving up the line from a super steep 160-170 degree angle and only get into the extreme South facing breaks. This is all speculation at this point so stay tuned.
