HURRICANE WATCH August 18, 2014 – The eastern Pacific Ocean remains active with Karina and Tropical Depression 12E. Tropical Storm Karina is a small tropical storm centered nearly 1,500 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. Moderate wind shear and marginally warm ocean temperatures along Karina’s track have limited strengthening in recent days. However, the wind shear will drop off slightly heading into Tuesday and ocean temperatures will warm a bit as the storm moves west-southwest. The drop off in wind shear allowed Karina to strengthen Monday afternoon and Karina should generally maintain strength through Tuesday.
Farther east, Tropical Depression 12E is a large tropical depression centered almost 700 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Warm water strengthen T.D. 12E into Tropical Storm Lowell over the next day or so. Rough surf and dangerous rip currents will begin to impact the southern coast of Baja California during the middle of the week and expand northward by late week. There could be an increase in swells and rip currents in Southern California by the upcoming weekend.

Thursday morning is looking pretty weak unless we get some help from the tropics. As of today the forecasts are calling for the formation of what will hopefully become Hurricane Lowell. If it does form it will be one of those sidewinder swells from 165-175 degrees that only gets into the most exposed South facing breaks… Only time will tell.
