SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SURF FORECAST UPDATED 8-20-13
______________________________________________________________________________

HURRICANE WATCH 8-20-13

There are couple of areas of concern in the eastern Pacific. The first concern is an area of thunderstorm activity about 900 miles to the southwest of Baja California. This feature is expected to meander during the coming days. Tropical development is unlikely with this feature in the next week.

The more promising area is a large cluster of thunderstorms several hundred miles to the southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. These storms are expected to continue on a general northwesterly track over the next several days, where they will encounter low wind shear and warm ocean temperatures. Due to this, it is likely that this area will develop into a tropical cyclone later this week.

Wednesday morning is shaping up to be another stinker with near flat surf for So Cal. With global warming and giant storms taking center stage, you’d think we could at least get some warmer water and a few well placed wind events to get us some surf. I’m thinking this Winter is going to be the year we’ve been waiting for, (glass full).

Thursday morning should see a slight improvement, but there’s a caveat involved… for only the most exposed South facing breaks. The top spots in the OC and San O’ areas will see some 14-16 second ground swell from a severe, 175-180 degree angle. Don’t be shocked when you head down to Manhattan Pier and it’s flat…
