HURRICANE WATCH August 28, 2014 – Marie weakened to a tropical storm and this trend will continue over the open waters of the eastern Pacific as the storm moves over cooler waters. Despite this weakening, the large swells produced by the storm over the past several days have radiated outwards from Marie and will affect the coast from Baja California northward to the Southern California beaches into Friday. These large swells may result in structural damage, significant beach erosion, as well as strong rip currents and minor coastal flooding.

No other tropical disturbances are expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the East Pacific Basin over the next 48 hours.

By Saturday morning we’ll be relying on a more traditional form of energy as a couple of small, fresh, long interval, SW ground swell moves in from a liberal 210-220 degrees. This should put the most exposed South facing beaches into the waist to chest high range on the sets. It won’t hold a candle to the Hurricane swell we just saw, but definitely better than a totally flat scenario.

There should be a few leftover straggler sets from Marie but that will continue to weaken through the day.

By Sunday morning should see a very slight increase in size with waist to chest high plus sets in the AM and we’ll also see some new, steeply angled NW wind swell slide for a steep 300-310 degree angle. This should kick up waist to chest high peaks for best West facing beaches.

Monday morning could be fun as both the SW and NW energy hang on for another day. The top combo spots should see waist to chest high surf. Once again, nothing too dynamic, but definitely better than a sharp stick in the eye.
