HURRICANE WATCH August 1, 2014 – Hurricane Iselle has been upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane as of early Sunday morning . Latest information has indicated that maximum sustained winds have increased to 115 mph, resulting in the upgrade from Category 2 to Category 3. Although, Hurricane Iselle has recently intensified, further strengthening is not expected. Models suggest that there will be little change in strength expected during the remainder of the day, and Iselle will begin to gradually weaken on Monday

As of Sunday morning Hurricane Iselle was approximately 1,500 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii and moving west at 10 mph. Iselle is expected to continue westward through this afternoon and evening. A decrease in forward speed is forecast for Monday and Monday night. If Iselle continues on its current track it may interact with Hawaii later this week as a tropical rainstorm.

Elsewhere, an area of low pressure well east of Iselle, about 700 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, has become more organized and now has a well-defined center of circulation. This area of showers and thunderstorms is likely to develop into a tropical depression within the next couple days as conditions become more favorable for further development. Should this area strengthen into a tropical storm, it will become Tropical Storm Juilo.

Monday morning should be a little better with waist high plus SW swell from a 215-220 degree angle for the top South facing beaches. Hurricane Iselle looks to come into the fold as well, and dish up waist to chest high sets from a reasonable angle of 190-200 degrees.

Tuesday morning will be comprised of small, but potent SW ground swell and Hurricane Iselle energy. There are several South swells out there and they’re all pulsing in from 190-220 degree angle. That should make for some interesting peaks, if you find yourself in the right spot at the right time.

The better South facing beaches should chest to shoulder high on the sets. Like I said, there’s a good mix of South swell in the water, so any spot with a look at the South should be a pretty safe bet!

Wednesday morning
should be better as yet another South Swell fills in through the day. The angle on this one is a little steeper, moving in from a 185-195 degree angle. There will still be pulses for the other swells and the Hurricane energy, but the meatier swell will focus in on the more exposed South facing beaches like Huntington, Newport and the San O’ area.
