With a heavy heart I’m predicting that the the Mother Lode of Winter swell is now in the rear view mirror, and although the large surf was rather sporadic, (especially in December), there were definitely some incredible days to be had if you put yourself in the right place at the right time. For me personally, I was in comeback mode most of the prime surf months, (Hip replacement surgery, followed by a brief boogie board stint), and just started hitting stride over the last few weeks.

Summer surf is a tough pill to swallow after ingesting a steady dose of adrenalin last week…. but now we’re in for summer crowds, elevated cases of Costcosis, and recent surf school graduates will be looming large in the near future. It’s time to start thinking about plotting a couple trips to go to where the MEAT of the swell energy is. Mainland Mex and Central America are prime destinations, and if you’ve already hit those keep moving down into South America or head off to INDO or Fiji. Our crew is going to check out Ecuador in early May and we’ll let you know what we find. Get out there and explore! You only go around once… as far as I know!

Tuesday morning looks similar with smallish, waist high + sets out of the NW, but more interesting is our first fresh pulse out of the Southern Hemisphere. Not real impressive, but the better South facing breaks will see a long, 14-16 second interval swell roll in from a 190 degree angle late in the day. Wednesday should see some fun little waist to chest high lines for the top S/SW facing breaks.

Wednesday morning looks to be the money day for the week, but the payoff will result in only sporadic, waist to chest high sets out of the South from that same 185-190 degree angle. Spots like San O’ and the OC will be biggest and best, but I have to admit I’m truly sad that the Southern Hemisphere will all of a sudden looks to be our go to swell direction…
