Hurricane Watch Hurricane Fernanda is now a strong Category 4 hurricane but So Cal looks to get little or no surf from from this system – We’re also watching another area disturbed area south of Mexico.
Hurricane Fernanda is a strong Category 4 major hurricane as it moves westward at about 12 mph. The storm is located about 1,200 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The storm has maximum-sustained winds of 140 mph with higher gusts and continues to move through a zone of warm waters which is conducive for further intensification through Sunday. Fernanda may peak as a Category 5 storm, or just shy of that mark, then begin to gradually weaken Sunday night or Monday morning as it begins to move across somewhat cooler ocean waters.
Fernanda will continue to move westward away from the Mexican coast over the next few days and will be higher waves and rough surf along the western Mexican coastline through the weekend. By later next week, Fernanda may track westward into the Central Pacific Basin. It is much too early to say at this point whether the storm could have any direct impacts on Hawaii. However, at the very least, some higher waves and rougher surf may occur late next week across the Hawaiian Islands.
