HURRICANE WATCH 10-22-13

Raymond remains a major Category 3 hurricane Tuesday. Gusty rainbands continue to thrash the southwestern Mexican coastline from Acapulco to near Aquila; the highest wind gusts observed have been close to 30 mph.

Raymond should remain nearly stationary today before taking a crucial turn away from the coast overnight and into Wednesday. A ridge of high pressure strengthening north of Raymond will be responsible for this change in course. As Raymond tracks westward later this week, it will gradually weaken, but will likely remain a hurricane through Thursday.

Wednesday morning the NW swell will hold, and the spots that can attract that steep angle, (305-310 degrees,) will continue to dish up waist to chest high sets.

Judging from the South Bay beach breaks today, these long interval swells will dish up nothing but closeouts. Any structured bottom, like a point or a reef, will yield much better shape. Until we get a macking swell or a steady diet of rain it looks like we’re stuck with brutally lined up walls on all the 16 second + interval swells.

Saturday morning we will see a bump out of the NW from a steep 300-310 degree angle. Nothing to get real excited about, but the top West facing beaches should see waist to chest high plus sets at the best West facing breaks. The angle remains steep, so only the better spots will see much action.
