HURRICANE WATCH September 15th, 2014 – In the United States, tropical moisture will stream into the Southwest ahead of Odile starting Tuesday. This will initially bring heavy thunderstorms, capable of producing flash floods, across southern Arizona on Tuesday. The threat for flash floods will expand across the Southwest Wednesday and Thursday. Washed-out roads and mudslides will impact some of the hardest hit areas.

Elsewhere in the basin, a broad low pressure system about 500 miles south-southeast of Acapulco, Mexico could become a tropical depression in the next 24 hours or so. It could become a tropical storm or even hurricane off the southwest Mexican coast later this week.

Tuesday morning should have some fun sets out of the SW as that long period swell, from an angle of 215-220 degrees, peaks in the morning. This should put the better South facing beaches in the chest high plus zone, and although not particularly large in wave height, it will be pushing some deep water with it.

It looks like the Odile energy should work it’s way into the mix as well, with potential for a little size at the super exposed South facing beaches. Right now, (see image above), Odile is hugging the coast which means that any swell we do see from this storm will slide in at a ridiculously sideways angle of 155-160 degrees and miss all but the most exposed South facing breaks. Things can change quickly, but if Odile remains on it’s current course we’re pretty much getting the big stymie for the remainder of it’s existence.

The conditions look okay with light and variable winds in the 1-5 MPH zone until 11AM and then those pick up to 10-12 MPH in the afternoon. The air temp tops out at scorching 88 degrees.

For Wednesday morning that 210-215 degree energy will continue to dish up powerful, chest high plus sets as the intervals drop to a still respectable, 16-18 seconds. It will definitely still have some pop to it when the sets do roll through.

Odile remains in play, from that extreme angle, so I’m making no promises unless the trajectory changes and it starts spinning to the West. The MOST EXPOSED BEACHES, (and not many of them), will see surf in the chest to shoulder high zone. Let me reiterate that nothing is etched in stone here and a Hurricane does not follow a script. I can only go on what the projections say on paper!!!

By Thursday morning that LONG interval SW energy will shorten to 16 seconds, and the sets will come in with less frequency, but there should still be some fun waves rolling through if you have the patience.

We should also see some fresh, 12-14 second, medium interval swell, moving in from the NW. This should be good for some waist high plus sets from a fairly steep, 310 degree angle.

By Friday morning there will be little to no evidence of the SW energy left. We’ll be reliant solely upon that NW energy, which should be good for one more day of waist high plus surf from that same 305-310 degree angle.
