HURRICANE WATCH September 24th, 2014 – Tropical Depression 18 is located 315 miles S/SW of Manzanillo, Mexico. The depression continues to move west at about 14 mph. Warm ocean water will allow the depression to strengthen into a tropical storm. This should happen later tomorrow and depression 18 should become tropical storm Rachel.

Current computer projections suggest tropical depression 18 will move west-northwest parallel to but well offshore of the southwest coast of Mexico during the next several days. Model output does suggest the system should turn more to the northwest early next week but still stay well off shore of the southern Baja Peninsula. By the time this tropical cyclone reaches that latitude it should start to encounter cooler water and as a result will start to weaken.

Thursday morning should see a pick up in size as some NW ground swell creeps into the picture. This swell will come down the line from a fairly steep 300-305 degree angle with meaty 14-16 second intervals as it fills in through the day. The best West facing breaks should see shoulder to head high plus sets in the afternoon.

By Friday morning that NW energy will have hit stride with shoulder to head high sets at West facing beaches and overhead sets for the top deepwater breaks. We’ll also see some stiff winds develop in the Santa Barbara channel which will be good for some short interval, NW wind swell generation for the better West facing beaches.
