HURRICANE WATCH September 25th, 2014 – Tropical Storm Rachel is centered about 455 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at about 13 mph.
Rachel is expected to continue to move west-northwest parallel to, but well offshore of, the southwest coast of Mexico during the next several days. During this time, favorable conditions will allow Rachel to strengthen and become either a strong tropical storm or perhaps Category 1 hurricane.
Model output does suggest the system should turn more to the north and northeast early next week but still stay well off shore of the southern Baja Peninsula. By the time, this tropical cyclone reaches that latitude it should start to encounter cooler water and as a result will start to weaken.
By Friday morning that NW energy will have hit stride with shoulder to head high sets at West facing beaches and overhead sets for the top deepwater breaks. We’ll also see some stiff winds develop in the Santa Barbara channel which will be good for some short interval, NW wind swell generation on Saturday, (for the better West facing beaches).

By Saturday morning should see more of the same as that NW energy is projected to continue dishing up shoulder to head high sets with some overhead thumpers at the best West facing breaks.
The Santa Barbara will continue to blow so we should see some more locally brewed wind swell for Sunday.
